The new State was made up of the former Abeokuta and Ijebu provinces of the former Western State, which itself came into being when it was carved out of former Western Region in 1967. The state’s nickname is “GATEWAY TO NIGERIA”. This is in recognition of it’s pioneering role in education, medicine, law and divinity, on the one hand, and its strategic position as the link by road, rail, air and sea to the rest of the country. Ogun State is blessed with many mineral deposits in commercial qauantity. The list includes bitumen, kaolin, phosphate, bauxite, granite, limestone, crude oil and such others. About AOSII
AOSII
AOSII Background: Association of Ogun state indigenes in Ireland (AOSII) dates back to 2003 when four passionate and people of like minds (Olatunji Idowu, Oluseun Oni, Segun Osinuga and Omowunmi Joseph) came together to brainstorm and initiate ideas capable of complementing on-going developments in Ogun state, Nigeria. In 2004, this group initiated what they called “GIVE and TAKE AWARDS” for Prominent Indigenes of Ogun state. The idea was to bring high achievers from Ogun state under one roof with intention of presenting them with lifetime achievement Awards and in turn work with them to establish community resource centers where people can access information in the areas in which they have excelled. The aim was to immortalize names but most importantly to create more resource centers for the people of Ogun state.
This idea was discussed with the Nigerian embassy Ireland officials (in 2004) at a meeting chaired by the then Consular Dr. Abiodun who happened to hail from Ogun state. She saw challenges in pulling such idea together at that time and instead encouraged the group to write to Multinational companies and libraries in Ireland to donate used computers and books towards enlightenment programs in Ogun state. The group did as she advised; however, the response was not particularly encouraging from the potential donors as there was skepticism towards genuineness of Nigerian groups.
However, the group did not relent in its effort to make an impact in Ogun state. To that effect, they initiated “Ogun Business Forum” in 2006, it was the time when republic of Ireland was at the height of unprecedented economic and cultural growth – from a state of near bankruptcy in the late 80’s, to a world class economy. The group believed that Ireland was an excellent model of economic development for developing countries; hence the need to develop strategies capable of attracting Irish to invest in Nigeria and Ogun state was a perfect choice.
Subsequently, the group put a plan together to create a platform in Ireland through which Ogun State representatives can come and specifically target Irish; governments and individual potential investors - to engage in direct marketing of investment opportunities in Ogun state and showcase real alternative investment destination and consequently establish lasting business relations between Ogun state and Ireland. The group equally wanted the government to canvass the Nigerian Irish population to consider investment in Ogun state – in Property, Agriculture, Construction and IT.
It was designed as a- 2 day event in collaboration with the Irish Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Trade and Enterprise, the Nigerian Embassy and Nigerian Association network Ireland (NANI).
While discussion was ongoing with the state government on possibility of “Ogun Business Forum”, the group was also in collaboration with NANI and Kamara Computers, exploring the possibility of securing computers that can be donated to secondary schools in Ogun state. By early 2007, the group have successfully secured, sent and distributed 50 encyclopaedia in-built computers to five secondary schools in Ogun state – to complement the ICT initiative of the state government. However, “Ogun Business Forum” met with bottleneck and remains pending.
In 2007, while this group was pursuing the above mentioned initiatives, a group of Ogun state indigenes who were oblivious of the efforts of the first group initiated a objective-driven association with a mission and vision similar to the Olatunji Idowu-led group. This second group comprising of Mr Olatunji Olaleye, Ms Omowunmi Fashola, and Mr Bankole Joseph mobilised and propagated the vision of an association that will positively impact on the lives of their kinsmen back home in Nigeria. This second group facilitated its first meeting in Cruiser's bar in Tyrelstown in which about nine people were presented. The second meeting recorded a higher turnout and the two topics that dominated discussion at the meeting were membership and registration of the association. Efforts to involve more Ogun state indigenes in the association caught the attention of the Olatunji Idowu -led group. In other not to divide or fragment the association, the two groups met and agreed to evolve as one. This led to the rebirth of what today is known as ASSOCIATION OF OGUN STATE INDIGENES IN IRELAND (AOSII). The following people were nominated as protem officers to pilot the association and get it registered in Ireland: Olatunji Idowu (Protem President), Mr Bankole Joseph (protem Coordinator), Mr Akin Ayilara (protem secretary) and Mr Owodunni (protem treasurer).
AOSII now registered in Ireland has about 70 members with each monthly meeting recording an average of 30 attendees. In September 2009, AOSII conducted its first election to vote for new executives as enshrined in its constitution
